Joseph Cotchett is widely regarded as one of the best trial lawyers in the United States, but there is much more to Cotchett than a history of dramatic courtroom success.
Cotchett possesses a unique army past that is certainly not common among other high-profile lawyers. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve during college, Cotchett was commissioned in the Army in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army intelligence Corps and even became a Special Forces Paratrooper and JAG Corps Officer, serving on active duty in1960 and 1961. Cotchett continued to remain on the active reserve list until 1991, when he retired as a decorated Colonel.
Cotchett is also the author of a substantial collection of law literature; his numerous writing credits include the titles: The Ethics Gap, LexisNexis; Persuasive Opening Statements and Closing Arguments, Matthew Bender; California Courtroom Evidence, California Products Liability Actions, and California Courtroom Evidence Foundations. Cotchett’s writing moved outside the law world in 2002, when he co-authored The Coast Time Forgot, a historic account of the San Mateo County coast.
Cotchett earned his B.S. in Engineering from California Polytechnic College, San Luis Obispo in 1960. Excelling at his undergraduate studies, Cotchett was named an Outstanding Graduate of his class. Cotchett made his first solid step towards a career in law in 1964, when he earned his J.D. from Hastings College of Law at the University of California in San Francisco.
After finishing his education and military service, Cotchett promptly set out on procuring a prolific 40 year legal career that would eventually lead him to the top of national rankings as one of the country’s best lawyers. During his distinguished career, Cotchett tried over 100 cases, defending everyone from the National Football League and The University of California to E&J Gallo Winery and the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court. Cotchett successfully defended and won cases for each of these clients.
In honor of his impressive accomplishments, Cotchett has been named one the nation’s most influential lawyers for the last decade. Cotchett’s dedication to public justice did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded Trial Lawyer of the Year by Trial Lawyers for Public Justice.
