Profile
Since its inception in 1968, the National Heritage Foundation has been changing the way people think about charitable giving. The National Heritage Foundation empowers individuals to support their own charitable causes through the establishment of personal family foundations. The National Heritage Foundation currently manages over 9,000 family foundations, spanning a diverse array of causes.
For a $385 start-up fee, along with various small management fees, the National Heritage Foundation gives anyone the chance to pursue a cause close to his or her heart. What’s more, because individual family foundations operate under the larger umbrella of the National Heritage Foundation, family foundation managers are free to focus all of their efforts on fundraising instead of tiring administrative endeavors. Specifically, the National Heritage Foundation manages the receipting, accounting, and depositing of all donations; the disbursement of all approved foundation funds; the filing of local, state, and federal tax information; and the confirmation and reporting of all donations.
The National Heritage Foundation was founded by Dr. J. T. “Dock” Houk. An accomplished entrepreneur, Dr. Houk conceived the National Heritage Foundation in opposition to the Federal Tax Reform Act of 1969. Dedicated to the principle that charitable giving was best left up to individuals, Dr. Houk severely disagreed with the complex regulations of the law and created the National Heritage Foundation to help people contribute to philanthropy without excess government interference. Forty years later, Dr. J. T. “Dock” Houk still manages the National Heritage Foundation as the organization’s CEO. His son, John T. “Tick” Houk serves as the President of the National Heritage Foundation.
