Over the course of his more than 25-year career in medicine, Jim Murtagh, M.D., has served as an administrator, researcher, lecturer, and clinical physician at some of the country’s leading medical institutions. Skilled within a wide variety of medical fields, Dr. Jim Murtagh currently practices pulmonary, intensive care, and sleep medicine through the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Dr. Jim Murtagh attended medical school at the University of Michigan. Graduating from the program with honors, Dr. Jim Murtagh completed both his post-doctoral internship and residency at the Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Demonstrating significant skill in clinical medicine, Dr. Jim Murtagh returned to the University of Michigan to accept a one-year fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Dr. Jim Murtagh’s success in his first fellowship led to his next role as a Medical Staff Fellow for the Laboratory of Cellular Metabolism at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). After two years in this position, Dr. Jim Murtagh became a Senior Staff Fellow at NHLBI, where he remained for an additional three years.
Dr. Jim Murtagh left NHLBI to take the first of several academic positions. Hired by the Emory University School of Medicine as an Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases, Dr. Jim Murtagh also served as the Director of the Core Facility for Molecular Biology and the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. Through Emory University, Dr. Jim Murtagh also practiced medicine at the Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur, Georgia, where he would eventually become Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy. In addition to his work at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, Dr. Jim Murtagh also served at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital as Chief of the Grady Memorial Pulmonary Clinic and PFT Laboratory.
Dr. Jim Murtagh is currently licensed to practice medicine in Georgia and Texas. Professionally, Dr. Jim Murtagh is affiliated with several prominent medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the American College of Chest Physicians, among many others.
