? Profile

The adventurous, young Calder Quartet, based in Los Angeles, has built a reputation for programming the traditional string quartet repertoire alongside modern classics and commissions from emerging composers. The Calder Quartet's members are violinists Benjamin Jacobson and Andrew Bulbrook, violist Jonathan Moerschel, and cellist Eric Byers. The Calder Quartet was the recipient of the 2009 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, and it is the quartet-in-residence at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. Additionally, the Calder Quartet co-founded the Carlsbad Music Festival with violinist and composer Matt McBane in 2004. Presenting concerts in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas, the Carlsbad Music Festival has sponsored an emerging composers' competition for the Calder Quartet every year since the inception of the festival. The Calder Quartet's repertoire includes standards by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, including Mozart's famous "Dissonance" quartet and Beethoven's Opus 135. Additionally, the Calder Quartet plays the six Bartók quartets as well as works by internationally renowned composers Thomas Adès (U.K.), Terry Riley (U.S.), and Christopher Rouse (U.S.). In fact, the Calder Quartet is the first quartet Christopher Rouse has composed for in over 20 years, and the Calder Quartet will première his new piece at the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas in June 2010. The Calder Quartet also released an album of works by Christopher Rouse in 2009 titled "Transfiguration." Members of the Calder Quartet have studied at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, the Juilliard School, the Colburn Conservatory of Music, and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, Germany. Performing frequently across California and the United States, the Calder Quartet has collaborated with indie rock bands Vampire Weekend and The Airborne Toxic Event and has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman with the latter. The Calder Quartet has performed in venues including Los Angeles' Zipper Concert Hall; New York's Le Poisson Rouge; and the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater in Washington, D.C.

"Honesty and openness are sometimes undervalued traits - many would prefer to hide the past, rather than to allow others to freely and publicly record it for all to see. By creating an iKarma Profile, Calder Quartet has demonstrated a firm commitment to maintaining a responsible and sincere reputation online. Such people, both rare and precious, are a credit to both business and society.

We believe that integrity should be rewarded. The iKarma team is happy to welcome Calder Quartet to our service."
