Consumers interested in cultivating nut trees in their backyard can find a variety of options at Aaron's Nursery, a Georgia-based plant provider that ships across the U.S. via the Internet. Many gardeners enjoy growing nuts for their delicious taste and high nutritional value; they are a good source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which promote heart health. Because of its Georgia location, Aaron's Nursery particularly emphasizes pecan trees, which are native to the state and very popular throughout the region. One interesting pecan cultivar sold by Aaron's Nursery is the Forkert tree, which was developed at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Tifton, Georgia. The Forkert produces large pecans with an easily removable paper shell; a pound of pecans can be obtained with as few as 40 Forkert nuts. With a ripening period that begins in October, the Forkert pecan hits its peak around Thanksgiving, making it an ideal choice for those who like to use pecans in their Thanksgiving dishes and desserts. Another unique type of nut tree sold by Aaron's Nursery is the Chinquapin tree, an American native tree that yields small, chestnut-like kernels. Unlike Oriental and Chinese chestnut burrs, which contain multiple nuts, the Chinquapin produces only one nut per burr. There are two varieties of Chinquapin trees: Alleghany and Georgiana. Aaron's Nursery also sells two varieties of almond tree, the Hall's Hardy and the Nonpareil. The Hall's Hardy attains its best flavor when roasted and is frequently used in chocolate bars. The Hall's Hardy almond tree produces beautiful white flowers in the spring and then forms a nut husk that encases the almond for the duration of the summer. The nut typically separates from the husk in the fall and is dried and shipped to nut markets in the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Nonpareil almonds, the other variety offered by Aaron's Nursery, thrive in the dry climates of the American West.
