Review #1312

After 4 years of working for my company, I decided to leave to find a better position (I'm a software developer). I decided to get a new suit for the interview process. Even though I work in software development (where jeans and t-shirt are typical), I believe in putting your best foot forward in an interview. To me, that means wearing a suit and tie. I also have a couple of weddings to go to later this year (not mine), so I figured that by getting a suit now I could have it do double duty (interviews+weddings)

The last suit I had was a) old (purchased it in 1999) b) out of fashion (it was from 1999!) and most importantly c) DID NOT FIT WELL!
I am 173cm tall (5ft 8inch) and am in pretty good shape. (Broad shoulders and back + flat stomach)
The first thing I did was go to Moores ( a chain of Canadian men's stores owned by Men's Wearhouse Inc). I tried on a lot of suit coats but none of them fit me. The biggest fitting problem I ran into was that it seemed that every jacket was made for someone who had a big belly. It didn't fit around my chest and I looked like I was wearing a muumuu!

Then I was referred to Samsons Tailors. I went in and met Steve (Sam's son) and he asked me what I wanted and gave me some really good advice. I never felt that Steve was trying to pressure me into a sale and valued his honestly. I didn't have time to get a custom suit done so I did not go for that option. I decided to get a suit and have it tailored to fit me. I had told him I wanted to look modern, professional but also having a bit of style. Steve has a great sense of style and got me into a dark/grey/black suit with faint pinstripes.

I had a fitting done that day and had another fitting done 4 days later. In then end I got this awesome fitting suit. I liked the fact that the suit would show off my body and maintain a crisp professional look.

In the future I am definitely going back to Samson's tailors for suits. Also, I would recommend that if you have the time and money that you get a custom made suits (that is Samson's specialty). Having spoken to some business friends of mine they all recommend custom made for the best fitting suits.
In the end I am very happy with my current suit. I found a job in no time (it's really hot for software developers right now). I can't say, "It was the suit that got me the job". I do believe though, that the confidence I projected while wearing the suit helped me in the interview process.
