Profile
| Charles John Wilder is Executive Chairman of Bluescape Resources, an independent oil, gas, and minerals company operating in the Appalachian region of the United States. Bluescape Resources’ growth strategy targets exploitation of the Company’s ample stock of lower risk development drilling opportunities. Bluescape Resources’ current leasehold position totals over 600,000 acres. One of Mr. Wilder’s most impressive prior achievements in the business world was his spearheading of two of the energy industry’s most successful financial and operational turnarounds. First, as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TXU Corp., Wilder changed the course of the firm from a bottom-quartile regulated monopoly to a competitive, high-performance industrial enterprise over a four-year period. Under Wilder’s guidance, TXU regularly delivered 70% annualized returns to shareholders and earned the rank of seventh best in the S&P 500. As the first external CEO in TXU’s established 120-year history, Wilder directed a total financial and operational overhaul that resulted in TXU becoming a top performer in the power sector. While Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Entergy Corporation, C. John Wilder stimulated improvements that resulted in annualized returns exceeding those of the S&P 500 by 18-fold. Specifically, shareholder value was built up to the point that total shareholder returns of 147% were seen, compared to returns of 26% for the S&P Electric Index (SPELEC) and 8% for the S&P 500. The results strengthened the overall perception of Entergy to a top-decile ranking, as documented by independent opinion research. Profitability and returns were improved as operational earnings grew 63% to $900 million with year-over-year EPS growth of over 19%. In turn, the profits led to increased return on invested capital from 6.0% to 7.6%, the fourth highest in the SPELEC.
